The program began when a dedicated physical therapist at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego, Mike Podlenski, began teaching patients at lunchtime in the clinic, knowing how much dance could help patients from both a physical standpoint and also socially and mentally. As the class size grew, Mike contacted celebrity dance professional, Mary Murphy, about bringing in a professional instructor to expand this idea of using dance as a component of physical therapy for service members and veterans learning to use their new prosthetic limbs. Within weeks of starting, the physical therapists recognized the potential for other patients with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) to benefit, and the program was expanded to include them and work in conjunction with both Physical and Recreational Therapy.
Classes are taught on a weekly basis and are open to all military personnel and their families. We are able to provide these classes at no cost to the patient due entirely to donations from individuals like you. We are planning to expand our current class offerings in San Diego as well as Washington DC later this year. We really do believe in our vision: Healing Our Heroes, One Dance Step At A Time.
If you'd like to help us continue to offer these types of programs, we would sincerely appreciate your donation. Just click on the "Donate" link above and do your part to bring joy and reconnection as our heroes rebuild their lives.

Bringing Smiles to Readers
We are always pleased to share our story with readers online from around the globe. The beauty of a connected world means that we have people who follow us from all over, including a soldier currently serving in Afghanistan to a Salsa DJ in Scotland! I was recently introduced to a blogger named Stacy Beth who runs "Likes to Smile" talking about "the good things in life" and I was honored when she asked to interview me about the Soldiers Who Salsa program. Below are the links to the articles she published on Memorial Day 2013. While I appreciate the "Superhero" title, I firmly believe that the men and women who serve in our military - and the families that support them - are the true Superheroes of this world. Enjoy reading! ~Jennifer Share: http://soldierswhosalsa.greenrope.com/.html/Bringing_Smiles_to_Readers/Blog21 |
